Six pupils from Year 6 joined eight other Prep schools, at Haileybury College, to attend their Science Discovery Workshop on the 11th February . Each group of children had to solve a ‘murder mystery’ involving several Haileybury staff members. The forensic science that they worked on included testing the PH value of different soils, identifying fibres from clothing, chromatography with pen inks and identifying fingerprints. The children learnt how forensic scientists gather evidence for use in a criminal trial.
Having narrowed it down to two possible suspects, the Westbrook Hay team finally identified Dr Johnson as the murderer. The final task of the day was to present the results in the fabulous Haileybury Science Discovery Laboratory. The children learnt some important skills, preparing them well for the future, including teamwork, problem solving, communication and some complex science. All the children left the event with a necklace containing an extract of their own DNA!
