After an exciting set of Semi-Finals, the House History Competition Final took place during the final week of term between Phoenix and Wyvern!
The first round tested the teams on their knowledge of the ‘Suffragette Movement’, which left the Houses level on points. Phoenix took a slim lead at the end of the second round due to their superior knowledge of ‘Communist Russia’ but this was surrendered after a strong showing from Wyvern on the third round with questions on the ‘D-Day Landings’.
With one point separating the teams moving into the final round, victory was secured by Eva with a correct answer to the final question of the fourth round, on the UEFA European Football Championships, regarding the location of the first European Championships (France)! Many congratulations to the winning House, Phoenix, captained by Mack, and to Wyvern, worthy opponents led by Sam.
This was the third edition of the House History Competition, with Wyvern winning in 2023 and Griffin in 2022. As a subject, History continues to go from strength to strength and is likely to be a popular choice for GCSEs! This year 21 pupils from Westbrook Hay entered into the prestigious Townsend-Warner History Prize, a national History competition for Prep Schools. The captains of the teams in the final, Mack and Sam, are the first pupils from the school to be invited back to sit the Second Paper and finished 158th and 213th in the country respectively, a superb achievement!
