Year 8 pupils on their enrichment programme, visited Cookham and the Stanley Spencer Gallery.
Stanley Spencer: Born in Cookham, Stanley Spencer was a distinctive student at the Slade School of Fine Art, studying alongside luminaries like Paul Nash, Dora Carrington, and Christopher Nevinson. His influence extended to mid-twentieth-century painters such as Hockney, Freud, Bacon, and even Emin. Notably, David Bowie collected Spencer’s works, and Billy Connolly is an enthusiast.
Gallery Tour: The pupils explored the Stanley Spencer Gallery, focusing on the exhibition titled “A Brush with History.”
Guided Walk: They also took a guided walk around Cookham, gaining insights into Spencer’s life. They visited locations depicted in his paintings, including his house and memorial stone.
Picnic in Cookham: The outing concluded with a delightful picnic and ice cream in the picturesque village of Cookham, basking in the sunshine.
Maybe one of these pupils will follow in the footsteps of Stanley Spencer.
